When the WSOP launched their online bracelet events this summer, one question was seemingly unanswered:
Was the winner of the WSOP GGPoker Main Event THE Main Event champion of the world? As in they deserve the same acclaim as Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar, Johnny Chan, and Jerry Yang?
The ambiguity of the title seemingly had the poker world divided with some saying yes, this is the new champion and others thinking no, since the entire event took place online and was a $5,000 re-entry and not the typical $10,000 freeze out.
Stoyan Madanzhiev won that main event for nearly $4 million and took to Twitter to say that he felt this whole time that he was the reigning Main Event champion.

No doubt this will only fan the flames of debate in the Twitterverse. Naturally, several players and pros weighed in on the debate:
I dunno but you’re the first to lose the main to a press release.

What a disgrace. I'd be pissed too.

Of course many seemed to think what Stoyan won simply qualified as an Online Main Event and not the MAIN Main Event.
I don’t care what they told you, you didn’t win the WSOP Main Event 😏

You won the 5k main event not the 10k freezeout main event

Imagine shipping like 4 million USD on an online poker tournament and actually giving a shit about some useless title. You even got the bracelet, seriously why even care?

Nathan Gamble meanwhile added that he thinks the final match should be 3-handed. A compromise of sorts.
I have it being presented to the top guys making decisions to put you in the final match between the domestic and international champions, 3 players for the bracelet and $1mm.
It’s doubtful they’ll go for it as it doesn’t have the impact of HU but hopefully they listen

Looking over all comments, it seems the court of public opinion is slightly against Stoyan. All that is certain is that this is a debate that might very well rage on for years to come. Or just maybe a few days.
