The poker world lost another well-known player and personality on Tuesday when the family of Sam Grizzle revealed that Grizzle had suffered a massive stroke before passing away hours later after being taken off life support. He was 67.
Word of Sam Grizzle’s condition came to light Monday when Grizzle’s daughter made a Tweet saying that her father had suffered a stroke and was on life support. After the family made a difficult decision, he was taken off life support early Tuesday before passing away Tuesday evening. Grizzle had apparently even been playing live poker as recently as last week.

The legacy of Sam Grizzle
Sam Grizzle had accumulated $1.3 million in live tournament poker winnings according to The Hendon Mob, but he was perhaps best known for his colorful personality.
While Grizzle was an accomplished player, he is perhaps best known for his off-beat and colorful personality, which sometimes got under players skin:
Heard Sam Grizzle passed. Playing 25 50 PLO game at Rio, pot like 1200 in all green chips, it was checked to river. Board was AK3QJ. Sam walked up to the table. I turned over 10368 and said “I got the 3!” 2 players mucked. Sam looked at me, said “And I’m on the fucking rail” RIP

After @ShannonShorr raised Sam Grizzle for the 3rd hand in a row, Sam says “What is this…revenge of the nerds”. True comic genius. RIP SAM

To casual poker fans, Grizzle is also well-known for his rivalry with Phil Hellmuth, which was prominently featured during the 2003 World Series of Poker ESPN broadcast that year. Grizzle, who had engaged in a fistfight with Hellmuth years prior, mocked Helmuth as he introduced himself as a star of the game to cameras.
Grizzle had never won a WSOP bracelet but had finished in the top 10 in nine WSOP bracelet events. His biggest WSOP win came this year, through a third-place finish in the No-Limit Hold’em Monster Stack on WSOP.com, which resulted in a $77,725 score, the largest of his career. It was one of seven WSOP cashes this year.

R.I.P Sam Grizzle. Sam is the only person I know that had the ability to say the same joke for 20 years straight and still make you laugh. For sure a character in the poker world.
