Negreanu is making some noise, and could someone win the player of the year race without a bracelet? Catch up with the stories to watch at the World Series of Poker.
Negreanu, on and off the felt
Daniel Negreanu usually makes news on the felt when he’s at the World Series of Poker. But this year, he’s been creating more of it away from the tables.
The four-time bracelet winner has been blogging regularly when he’s not playing in Vegas, and he’s stirring up the poker world when he does. First, he blogged about live coverage of the WSOP at the official website, saying that the reporting and chip counts were inaccurate, and should be better. That sparked a round of stories and opinions on the internet.
Next, in the wake of the ladies championship, Negreanu took issue with Annie Duke calling herself the best female poker player in the world. That touched off some online sparring between Negreanu and Duke.
Surely, Negreanu would rather be the center of attention for his poker playing. And he nearly was in a tournament he busted early today, finishing 16th in Event No. 26, $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em / Six Handed. He also finished eighth in the $10K 2-7 lowball event. It seems like Negreanu is playing well, and will try to earn his first bracelet since 2008.
New POY leader
We’re nearly halfway though the WSOP, and there’s still no clear-cut favorite to win the player of the year race. But we do have a new leader — James “Flushy” Dempsey. He now has a first and a second this year after his runner-up finish in the $10K Omaha hi-lo event.
Amazingly three of the top five players in the standings do not have a bracelet this year. Dan Heimiller, who was the leader before Dempsey took over, is quietly having a big WSOP, with four cashes, two final tables, and one final table that he bubbled. Through it all, he pushed his career WSOP winnings over $1 million.
The other two players with no bracelets but in the mix are John Juanda and Vladimir Shchemelev, who both have three cashes, and three final tables. Shchemelev is currently one of the chip leaders in the latest $10K event, limit hold’em.
Seven events in one day?
It will be one of the busiest days of the WSOP, with five events continuing, and two more starting.
There will be three events playing to a winner today, including the $1K no-limit hold’em event, a $2.5K NLH 6-handed tourney, and a $1.5K stud event.
Starting today? Event No. 30: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em, and Event No. 31, $1,500 HORSE.
