Ivey makes some noise, and Dwan makes people take notice. Catch up with the storylines to watch at the World Series of Poker on Monday.
Ivey in effect
Phil Ivey, widely considered the best all-around player in poker, has had a quiet start to his WSOP. He’s only had one cash for just over $3,000.
But he’s got a big stack in Event No. 15, $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better World Championship. Unofficially, he’s the chip leader heading into day two.
Just last year, Ivey won a pair of bracelets and made it to the final table of the main event in one of the greatest WSOPs any one player has ever had. Duplicating or surpassing that feat will be difficult, but if anyone’s up to the task, it’s Ivey.
He already has seven bracelets, and he likely has his sights set on joining the group in double digits: Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth.
Pros sweating Dwan
That probably got the attention of a lot of high-stakes pros.
Tom “durrrr” Dwan finished in second place in a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event early on Monday morning. And his quest for his first bracelet was almost secondary to an even bigger story surrounding Dwan.
Dwan has booked a ton of action on his ability to win a bracelet at this WSOP. While the amount he stood to win by shipping the tournament was definitely in seven figures, some reports put the amount as high as $10 million.
The pros in the stud tournament mentioned above were apparently trying to get any news they could from Dwan’s final table, and they all breathed easier when he busted in second.
Unfortunately for them, Dwan has a lot more events to try to ship a bracelet, and if he can make his way through a minefield of a $1,500 tournament once, he has to like how he’s playing, and his chances of doing one position better before the WSOP is over.
What’s going on today?
After some very busy days, Monday is kind of a lull for the WSOP.
In addition to day two of the $10K stud hi-lo event, there will be the final day of a 2-7 lowball tourney. There’s also day two of a $1K event.
The only event to start today is Event No. 16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em / Six Handed.
