A woman will get a bracelet, and Juanda, Negreanu and Bloch wield dangerous short stacks in the final 10 of a $10K event. Catch up with the stories to watch at the WSOP on Friday.
Ladies night
No woman has won a bracelet yet at this World Series of Poker. But now one is guaranteed to get some new jewelry.
Today marks the start of Event No. 22, $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship. It gives the ladies a chance to add a bracelet to their resumes that the men can’t win.
Heading into the WSOP, women had taken down three high-profile events this year:
–Annie Duke won the NBC National Heads-up Poker Championship
–Vanessa Selbst won the North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun tourney
–Liv Boeree won the European Poker Tour stop in San Remo
At this WSOP, two women have made final tables, including Jennifer Harman, in the $10K stud hi-lo event.
Beware of the short stacks
Usually, short stacks get punished at final tables of large tournaments. But the short stacks are likely to fight back in Event No. 19, 2-7 Draw Lowball World Championship (No-Limit).
The bottom three of the final 10 players could hardly be a more accomplished group: John Juanda, Daniel Negreanu and Andy Bloch.
Juanda has been on a tear, going all the way back to last year. This year, he has a pair of final tables under his belt and has already cashed for more than half a million dollars. He made four final tables at last year’s WSOP, including a fourth-place finish in this same event last year. And 2008 wasn’t shabby for Juanda either — he won the World Series of Poker Europe main event.
Negreanu hasn’t even cashed at this year’s WSOP, let along making a final table. He made a pair last year in Vegas, and he finished second in the WSOPE main event.
Both players have four bracelets.
Bloch is still in search of bracelet No. 1. He has one cash this year at the WSOP, in the $50K Players Championship. Bloch has finished second twice in WSOP events, once in a $10K, once in a $50K HORSE.
Oh, and eight-time winner Erik Seidel is also at the table.
What’s going on today?
Two events will crown winners today, or early Saturday morning: Event No. 18, $2,000 Limit Hold’em and Event No. 19, $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball World Championship (No-Limit). Two $1,500 events that started on Thursday, one stud, one pot-limit Omaha, will continue into their second days.
Two events start today: the ladies event mentioned above and Event No. 23, Limit Hold’em / Six Handed.
