The winner of the $5K event at the World Series of Poker takes home $800K, and big names vie for a bracelet in the $10K lowball event. Catch up with the events from Thursday and early Friday at the WSOP.
Event No. 17: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em
Jason DeWitt had two close calls at final tables of the 2009 WSOP. He took second and third at events last year.
This time, when he got to heads-up play, he closed it out, taking down the top prize of more than $800K.
Here were the final table payouts:
Jason DeWitt, $818,959
Sam Trickett, $505,725
Jeff Williams, $328,762
Peter Gilmore, $241,472
Amit Makhija, $179,866
David Benefield, $135,718
James Carroll, $103,594
Paul Foltyn $79,957
Manelic Minaya, $62,350
Antonio Esfandiari finished in 12th place.
Event No. 18: $2,000 Limit Hold’em
The tournament played down to a 10-handed final table, and among the players is Matthew Matros, who has already won a limit hold’em bracelet at this year’s WSOP.
The chip leader is Eric Buchman, who was a member of the 2009 November Nine from the main event.
Here are the the chip counts:
Eric Buchman, 453,000
Hansu Chu, 447,000
Steven Hustoft, 383,000
Flavio Ferrari, 373,000
William Jensen, 326,000
Matt Grapenthien, 254,000
Brent Courson, 240,000
Matthew Matros, 224,000
Gary Bogdanski, 115,000
Daniel Quach, 55,000
One of these players will take home the top prize of $200K today.
Event No. 19: $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball World Championship (No-Limit)
There are just 10 left in the third $10K championship of the WSOP, and there are some big names left, including eight-time winner Erik Seidel. Here are the chip counts:
David Baker, 526,000
George Danzer, 425,000
Eric Cloutier, 366,000
Doug Booth, 359,000
Erik Seidel, 280,000
Eric Kesselman, 247,000
John Monnette, 238,000
John Juanda, 225,000
Daniel Negreanu, 223,000
Andy Bloch, 146,000
The short stacks are a scary bunch. Bloch is still in search of his first bracelet; John Juanda has four already and is at his third final table of this WSOP; and Negreanu, with four bracelets as well, is making his first deep run.
The list of recognizable pros who left on day two is longer than the list of those who are left. Busts included Tom Schneider, Huck Seed, Mike Matusow, Chris Ferguson, Eli Elezra, Doyle Brunson, Tom Dwan, and Barry Greenstein.
Event No. 20: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha
Of the two events that started on Thursday, this one was more well-attended, with 885 players registering. After a swift day of play, there are just 95 players left. The winner will take home more than a quarter of a million dollars.
Jonathan “Fiery Justice” Little, a winner of two World Poker Tour titles, is the unofficial chip leader, while Christian “charder30″ Harder, is second.
Other notables still with chips include Nenad Medic and Jason Mercier.
Event No. 21: $1,500 Seven Card Stud
A small field of 408 players turned out, meaning first place will be the only six-figure score out of this tournament. There are less than 120 players left.
Lots of top pros turned out in a good opportunity for non no-limit hold’em players to take down a bracelet. Bracelet winner Scott Seiver is the unofficial chip leader heading into day two. Other notables still in include former main event champions Greg Raymer and Carlos Mortensen, bracelet winner Alex Kravchenko, Sorel Mizzi and Tom “durrrr” Dwan.
