There is a lot of confusion and cloudiness surrounding heads up poker. Let’s look at a few facts and some exciting positives to examine closer to help you understand why tackling the challenge of heads up tournaments – also called heads up SNGs – might just be the best thing for your game.
First off, what is heads up play? Simply put, heads up poker simply means one versus one. Whether at the end of a long tournament, or a heads up match or cash table, all forms of poker will have a “heads up” aspect to it. So let’s look a bit deeper at some of the intricacies surrounding heads up poker.
You’ve battled long and hard. You’ve outlasted a minefield of entrants; avoided numerous coolers and bad beats, ran well in the coin flip situations. Now you’re down to the final two. All that stands between you and the 1st place prize is one other player. What do you do? How do you adjust? Playing one-versus-one is a different game than the ten person table you started out with hours, or perhaps, days earlier. You will notice, the biggest jump in prize pools goes from 2nd to 1st, so it is to your advantage to master heads up play.
Another interesting thing to look at is who the biggest winners online are – they are heads up players. Heads up cash and heads up sit-n-go’s players have the ability to make enormous amounts of money – per session, per day, per week, per month, per year, and lifetime. They also are the fastest to rack up and clear bonuses, earn the most rake back dollars and offers, and reach the highest VIP levels at various poker sites. Nine of the top ten total profit leaders on the shark scope leader boards (www.sharkscope.com => leader boards) are heads up sit-n-go players. In no other game is your advantage as clear cut as in heads up poker.
Another benefit to heads up play is the improvement your total poker game will undergo. If you want a way to expose your leaks and see your shortcomings as a player, play heads up (one versus one play). This will be the fastest way to improve; in no other game will you be forced to see as many flops, turns, rivers, being put to a decision at every instance. A complete novice could benefit the most from playing very low stakes heads up play due to the sheer nature of the beast. You will be forced to make decisions on whether to call, raise, or fold without repose. And not only just to call or raise, but how much to call or raise, non-stop.
When the cards are dealt, when you see a flop, turn, and river, you will have to decide what to do – and if you should decide to raise or bet – how much to bet. In no other form of poker are you as actively involved as in heads up play.
Hopefully this introductory article to heads up poker has shed some light on this exciting form of poker. The financial gain and overall poker transformation one stands to gain from playing heads up poker is there for the taking. Good luck at the tables.
