What Books Should You Read on Limit Hold Em Poker?

Jace Thomas

Reading the right poker books when you’re just starting out in limit hold ‘em can make a big difference in your poker experience. People form habits quickly; read the right books and you’ll form good ones, read the wrong ones [or none at all] and you’ll blow a lot of money learning the hard way. Here are the books I recommend to newcomers, in the order listed. All books are available from amazon.com, just click on the title. Avoid the ‘for dummies’ books - you can get more bang for your buck from these:

1) Ken Warren Teaches Texas Hold’Em. Warren’s book is a great starter and is quite possibly the most comprehensive beginner’s book available. His advice leans toward the conservative, which is the best bet for beginners.

2) Winning Low Limit Hold’Em - Lee Jones. Read this after Warren. Jones advocates a more aggressive style of play, especially preflop, that you’ll be better suited to handle after you have some hands under your belt.

3) Texas Hold’Em for Advanced Players - David Sklansky. The title says it all - when you’ve mastered the basics, move on to this involved text.

4) Middle Limit Holdem Poker - Ciaffone & Brier. This book consists primarily of hand quizzes and is a great way to sharpen and focus your game.

There are of course, several other good books on limit, but if I could go back and learn all over again, this would be the list I would now give myself then. The list my now self would give my then self. Whatever, you get the point.
