As rooms such as Stars and FTP continue to expand aggressively into the live tournament circuit, at least one room – UB – has decided that its future is better served with focus on the digital felts.
In an announcement that no doubt surprised an overwhelming majority of their player base and the community at large, UB (formerly known as Ultimate Bet) made it known today that plans to host the Aruba Classic in 2010 (and beyond) have been scrapped.
“It is with great regret that we are announcing that the Aruba event will not run this year but 2010 is going to be an exciting year for UB and its players,” said Paul Leggett, Chief Operations Officer of UB parent company Tokwiro. “Over the last year, we’ve been redefining the UB brand in every way. We love the Aruba Poker Classic event but we think we can do a lot more for our players by investing in new events and rewards.”
What those events and rewards will be is a bit foggy at present, but a couple of details were included in the press release. As far as live events go, UB offered only a vague mention of a “larger presence at the exitsing major events”. Online, UB plans to offer a monthly 500k guaranteed tournament that aims to evolve into a million dollar guaranteed event and to run the UBOC twice a year instead of annually.
The Aruba Classic is still mentioned in various places on the UB website, including the MTT Leaderboards that include an Aruba package as part of the awards for winners. The UB blog and the front page have yet to make any mention of the change, and as of yesterday the AC was still being advertised in the lobbies of both UB and sister site Absolute Poker.
No word yet on when the second UBOC will occur. We’ll update as information emerges.
