A report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal says that efforts to regulate online poker in the United States could be done until next year.
The article, by Howard Stutz (and which you can read in its entirety here), paints a bleak picture for federal regulation in 2012:
A Wall Street gaming analyst told investors Friday that debate over federal legislation that would legalize Internet poker has most likely been pushed into 2013 after lawmakers didn’t attach an online gaming bill to the payroll tax cut extension.
That expert, Macquarie Securities gaming analyst Chad Beynon, went on to say the possibility of online poker regulation wasn’t entirely dead, however, as lawmakers likely view federal legislation as superior to piecemeal laws in individual states. He also notes that Nevada stands to gain the most, as it is the state closest to implementing regulated online poker, at this point.
This, of course, is just one expert’s opinion. An online poker bill could theoretically be attached to another piece of legislation at any point during a Congressional session. And, there has actually been a bit of momentum for considering an online poker bill for passage on its own merits, with several Congressional hearings on the matter in recent months.
The website Poker News Daily broke down some of the possibilities in a story here:
With the decision not to tack online poker legislation on to the payroll extension bill (the bill is expected to be signed by President Barack Obama at any time), online poker advocates are looking to find another potential, however unlikely, way to push the legislation forward. Segments of the Obama Administration’s jobs package has been talked about as a potential vehicle as well as important cyber security legislation that was proposed earlier this week in the Senate. As a final option, the session following the November elections – the infamous “lame duck” period – could be a spot where the online poker legislation gets a push, much like Sen. Reid attempted in 2010.
No matter what happens, the topic is at least getting some national attention, which is better than the alternative for American online poker players.
