A suspect has admitted to taking part in a robbery during the European Poker Tour tournament in Berlin earlier this month, in which four armed men stole more than $300,000.
The 21-year-old man, whose name was not released, turned himself into authorities and named three other suspects. One of them was already arrested. According to an Associated Press story:
Authorities issued photos of the three — Ahmad el-Awayti, 20, of undetermined nationality; Jihad Chetwie, a 19-year-old German; and Mustafa Ucarkus, a 20-year-old Turkish citizen. They said they did not have further suspects. Arrest warrants were issued for the three. Their Berlin addresses were searched on Tuesday, but they weren’t there and “we assume they’re on the run,” investigator Stefan Teller said. Officials wouldn’t speculate on where they might be.
El-Awayti was arrested this afternoon at a subway station. The two suspects who are still at-large have past criminal records.
The car used in the heist has been recovered, but the money stolen from the Grand Hyatt in downtown Berlin has not been recovered, according to the AP story.
The hotel was robbed during the main event of the EPT tournament on March 6. During the robbery, chaos ensued in the hotel and disrupted the poker tournament, which resumed later in the day. No one was seriously injured in the robbery. Until recently, authorities had been unsuccessful in turning up leads or suspects, despite numerous photos and videos that were taken of the robbery.
