After a few months of ‘will-he-won’t-he’ speculation, Tom Dwan and Full Tilt Poker made it official this week with the announcement that the online cash phenom has been signed to their official roster of pros.
A relationship between Full Tilt and Dwan has been the target of vague rumors for the last year or two. The match makes sense: FTP is home to the cash games that Dwan frequents online, and the much talked about ‘durrrr Challenge’ is officially hosted on FTP.
There’s no official word on what held up the signing for so long – many think it was a matter of compensation or Dwan believing that he could do something more with his name. Dwan does seem to have been on a bit of a media tear as of late. Since appearing on High Stakes Poker Season 6, it’s been hard to find a poker television program without some feature role, cameo or at least reference to Dwan.
Many believe that Dwan’s work paid off with a pretty sweet deal from Tilt. While it’s not official from Full Tilt, Dwan was announced as a member of Team Full Tilt, as opposed to a Full Tilt Pro (commonly referred to as ‘red pros’. That distinction is supposedly worth a good deal of money, as Team FTP members are said to own a piece of the company (or of the software company that licenses the client to FTP, whichever), while red pros are said to receive a rakeback and hourly play deal.
No word on whether or not this will speed up the Durrrr Challenge or not (probably not, although it might get a bit more coverage from FTP now), or if the FTP signing was somehow related to the delaying of the live version of the durrrr Challenge. That series of matches was set to be held in the UK back in September, but never materialized and now has a vague date in the winter, with the new location somewhere in Vegas.
Tom Dwan joins a roster of Team FTP that includes Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Chris Ferguson, Eric Sidel, Howard Lederman and several others.
