Here’s what to watch for across the pokerverse for the week starting September 6th, 2010.
Coverage of the World Series of Poker’s main event on ESPN continues on Tuesday at 9 p.m., with day 3, the first day the entire field played together after separate day 1s and 2s. Among the players you’ll see in action is five-time bracelet winner and former main event champ Scotty Nguyen, 2009 Bluff Magazine Player of the Year Jason Mercier, 2010 Players Championship winner Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, four-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu and defending champion Joe Cada.
Here’s a preview of what you will see:
UB.com has created some buzz on the interwebz with a couple of commercials it came up with to promote its website. Here’s one of them:
First, some take issue with the fact that UB can’t come up with its own marketing idea, so it spoofs the style of Full Tilt’s rather popular commercials, complete with the black and white video and lookalikes of some of FTP’s pros (Chris Ferguson, Phil Ivey, et al). Then, it manages to not be funny (we’re sorry if you liked the dog joke in the above video).
Anyway, it doesn’t seem like UB can do much right, of late. Earlier, the site had a flaw with its encryption code that created security problems (those were fixed). Its recent UB Online Championship had one tournament in which players could limp in for less than the big blind at points. The Cereus Network, and in turn UB, was recently sold to a new owners, and we’re guessing they’d like to stem the tide of bad publicity. UB does have a lot going it for it — pretty good software and some popular pros (Phil Hellmuth, Joe Sebok, Annie Duke). These commercials probably aren’t going to help a whole lot, based on early internet reviews. We’ll be curious if these make it on TV this week or anytime soon.
As always, it’s a busy week for live tournament poker all over the world. Probably the biggest event is the PartyPoker.com World Poker Open VI, a £10,000 buy-in that begins today in London, on the heels of last week’s World Poker Tour event. The Commerce Hold’em Series at the Los Angeles casino continues into its second week, with a $120 event that has six different “starting sessions” over the course of three days, in which players can buy back in if they busted in an earlier session. The Borgata Poker Open Poker in Atlantic City gets under way Wednesday; Saturday features at $1,090 two-day event. PokerStars will host the United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour event in Dublin with a 1,100 Euro buy-in that starts Thursday.

The World Championship of Online Poker at PokerStars has the attention of the poker world right now. The series started Sunday, and there are many big events scheduled for the first week. On Tuesday, there’s a $1,050 buy-in two-day no-limit hold’em event that starts at 20:00 PS time, and it guarantees $1 million. Three events on the weekend guarantee seven figures: Event No. 19 ($109 buy-in, $1.25M guaranteed, 13:00 Saturday), Event No. 21 ($215, $1.5M, 13:00 Sunday) and Event No. 22 ($530 two-day event, $3M, 17:00 Sunday). In all, there are 19 events that start between now and Sunday.
