Here’s what to watch for across the pokerverse for the week starting August 23rd, 2010.
The four “day ones” have been completed in ESPN’s coverage of the World Series of Poker main event, and the broadcast schedule moves on to the first of two “day twos.” There will be two hours of coverage starting at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Among the players who were still in at the start of day 2a were two-time main event winner Johnny Chan, Patrik Antonius, 2003 runner-up Sammy Farha and Players Champions winner Michael Mizrachi, among others. We rarely get a chance to see the best in the world rise to the top this quickly, but Day 2A was anything but typicalHere’s a preview of what you’ll see when you tune in.
The House of Representatives in the U.S. is out of session until September, meaning no movement on H.R. 2267, a bill that would regulate and legalize online poker. That means all that can really happen is posturing, as online interests continue to position themselves for a world in which the United States market opens up to anyone who wants to be licensed. People have openly started taking shots at PokerStars and Full Tilt, who, under the wording of the legislation, might be in a gray area for being licensed in the U.S. Some people contend that the two online poker rooms may face trouble, post-regulation. Like Bwin CEO Norbert Teufelberger, who said this in an interview: “We would expect that once the U.S. regulates these two companies will not have access to the market, and once that happens we’ll then see who the leader will be. They say they’re not operating illegally but I think they are. Let’s see who is right.” No one has really responded directly to this statement, although PokerStars and the lobbying group the Poker Players Alliance have said previously that they believe the sites are operating legally. Regardless, as everyone waits this week for some movement on the issue of regulation, we’re sure more posturing will be taking place.
Verneer kicks off the week talking low-stakes NL, and new pro (and SNE) RonFar3 makes his CR debut. The week continues with NxtWrldChamp, mu(x+t), BallzDeepx and LearnedfromTV.
Wrapping up the week at our favorite training site: Jacksup talks MTTs, Faarcyde chats about life without a HUD and Taylor and Andrew top it all off with Count the Zeros.

The biggest thing going in live poker this week is the conclusion of a World Poker Tour event, the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles. That tournament is going on, and the final table is scheduled to be played on Wednesday. You can get live updates here. Among the players still in on Monday were Erica Schoenberg, Joe Sebok and Joe Hachem. Beyond that, it’s a very busy week in live poker. The WPT gets right back at it with the London Poker Classic, which starts on Friday at The Palm Beach Casino. The Indiana State Poker Championship in Lawrencesburg will hold its main event ($1,600 buy-in) starting on Saturday. The Asian Poker Tour Philippines starts Monday, which interestingly has two big buy-in events on Wednesday — the $2,700 main event and a $10K high-rollers event. The Bay 101 Open in San Jose, Calif., kicked off on Monday, and the $2K main event is on Sunday. The FullTilt.com Poker Series Spain, in Madrid, features a 1,650 Euro event on Friday. And right next door in Portugal, the European Poker Tour will host a 5,300 Euro event in Vilamoura on Saturday.
The UB Online Championship 5 continues into its second week with a bunch of big tournaments. The biggest is a $1 million guaranteed event, a $1,050 buy-in hosted by Phil Hellmuth on Sunday. Before that there will be eight events that guarantee at least six-figure prize pools. Here’s the rest of the schedule (times Eastern):
