Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has joined PokerStars as a brand ambassador, in a move that had been rumored in the poker world in recent weeks.

PokerStars announced that the Portuguese soccer player is now a member of Team PokerStars. The online poker site adds one of the biggest stars in the world’s most popular sport to its roster. Ronaldo boasts the largest following of anyone on the social media site Facebook, with more than 103 million fans. He also has over 35 million followers on Twitter. The current Real Madrid player has won the FIFA Ballon d’Or as soccer’s best player the past two years.

Ronaldo already announced the move to his Twitter following:

The signing was rumored earlier this month, when Ronaldo posted a picture of himself playing with PokerStars-branded chips on Instagram.

It’s the second high-profile signing for PokerStars, which added Brazilian star Neymar earlier this month, as well. He also joins soccer legend Ronaldo and tennis star Rafael Nadal as PokerStars ambassadors.

“I like playing for winning teams and PokerStars is the perfect partner for me,” Ronaldo said in a press release from PokerStars’ parent company, Amaya Gaming. “As a brand, it is always looking at ways to improve and stay ahead of the curve, and as an athlete that is something I truly respect. I started playing poker a few years ago and I love the competition, strategy and fun. I’m looking forward to taking my game to the online and live poker tables and meeting my fans head to head. Although football is my world, poker has always been my game. I’m very excited to join the team.”

According to PokerStars, Ronaldo will appear “in advertising campaigns, and make special appearances in major live events and online poker tournaments.” PokerStars will also be offering a promotion where fans can meet and play against Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s PokerStars ID will be “C.Ronaldo.”
