SNG Annotated #001 - Party 200 NL, April 26th
The following is an annotated SNG I played at Party where I finished in the money. I’m looking to do a series of these, so if you have any feedback, let me know. Note that I’ll cut out a lot of unimportant hands to keep the file size down, so that will account for some really big shifts in chip stacks.
If you’d like to comment on my play, feel free to post in our forums, I’d love to hear feedback.

Pretty loose call on the flop here and I got lucky on the turn for it. I was calling with the intention of bluffing at the flush or betting the pair if I hit, or possibly betting a check. I don’t mind throwing around a few chips early, but this looks a little too loose. Sometimes these things work out, sometimes they don’t; if another rag hits the turn and I get bet, I’m obviously gone.

This is just pure luck, altho it against points out that I don’t mind limping early with small hands when the blinds are this tiny. I’d be willing to call a small raise behind with this hand, altho I’m less likely to call a raise if there are a bunch of limpers in between myself and the raiser - say I limp here and the sb raises to 40, no problem - but if a few others had limped in between us, I’d be more hesitant. The turn call is pretty automatic, as I’m a lot more likely to put an early position [EP] raiser on an A than a flush draw, altho he could have both in this spot, I suppose, but this would be an incredible laydown for me and I saw no reason to make it here.
Now I have a stack, which means more limping and calling off small raises! Yay!

It’s been about 10 hands since I really played anything, so here I pick up a nice hand in ok position and call a smallish raise with it. I don’t mind bleeding off a bit at this point, as the PF action is pretty cheap relative to my chips. More importantly, 2k just isn’t going to get me into the money comfortably, so I need to play a bit here before we get into the short stack all in craze that pops up around 50-100 / 100-200. I’d rather be playing here than having to sweat 66 on my BB when a short stack pushes in for 800 more. Nothing flops, and I’m easily away, the other great thing about smaller cards.

Boy do I hate this bluff. The flop is virtually draw free, the one draw that is out there makes on the turn and he just keeps pushing. There’s a rational break on his part - what could your opponent call a pot sized bet on the flop with? Maybe QJ, but I just don’t see the turn bet as a good move here.

Maybe I call with a heart on the flop here, maybe I should’ve bailed preflop, but the minimum bet, I really just hate folding my BB to those small raises. We’re down to 7 players and blinds at 5-100. The table has been waking up, and I expect more raises PF in the following hands. I’m actually not in the best shape, sitting in a tight pack for 2nd, but I haven’t been seeing much and didn’t make any progress by calling in the 50-100 stage, so it looks like I might need some actual cards at some point. How odd.

I don’t know a move more essential in these SNG’s than raising from the cutoff [CO] as the blinds start to move up. A round of blinds is pretty important to me at this stage - not critical or anything, but if I don’t improve soon, when the blinds get to 100-200 I’m right into allin mode. The BB’s call concerns me a little, but paired boards are pretty easy to bluff at, relatively, and I don’t see him risking his stack with a lone ace in this spot. If I get called, I’m obviously in fairly bad shape, but I’ll have position next hand or so and might be able to at least grab blinds to get healthy. I don’t see a world in which I check this flop in this spot, but I may have overbet a touch. 500 would’ve done the job the same.

I pick up a real hand the very next deal and do exactly the same thing. I think it’s important to not vary your raises PF much, especially when you’re doing them back to back, altho there is something to be said for a rash looking all in push here that might tempt a short stack behind me or a policing larger stack - the short stack scenario is much more likely. No takers, but I still like the blinds here, moving back to healthy.

This was just a mental error, plain and simple. I can maybe justify pushing him allin, but even that is a little suspect as we’re not really on the bubble right now. I should have never limped, and once I limped, I certainly should not have called 400 more. I really thought this decision would come back to haunt me later.

Ah, blinds at 100-200 and the allin fest begins. Note with my stack relative to the shorter stacks, I can’t afford to play sheriff and have no reason to do so. I’m still in a tight 2nd, but I won’t be for long as these shorter stacks either combine or feed a larger stack. In short, I’m not doing as well as it seems. When two more players go out, if I don’t take one of them out, there’s a very good chance I’ll be around 4th.

I’ve been quiet and he is not calling without aa-jj, ak or aq. That’s my assessment anyhow. Why would he risk his stack on anything less? Plus, someone has gone allin in front of me 4 out of the last 5 hands, so I have to move when I can lead out. A round of blinds is pretty crucial here.

6 hands, 6 allins in front of me, and I have to repeat the move from last round to get the blinds. I’m also not as terrified of a call here, as I’m even money with about half of the hands he might call with. Notice the blind jump - now we hit the stage where two people should go out quick as the smaller stacks start realizing they can’t just fold to allins every time and wait for a big hand. With 1800, I can afford to hang out for a round, maximum, before I start moving with way more marginal hands.

Two hands later and we’ve lost two people. I’ve slipped down to fourth and can’t afford to be limping or throwing away hands like this. If someone behind me wakes up with a big hand 4 handed, I lose. I think I have enough chips to make the blinds think twice before calling with 22-66 and a weak ace, so might as well push. I do not want someone to think they can play back at me, say if I only raised 500 or so. I want the blinds.

jc041102 is playing pretty smart here by making these small raises with the lead on the bubble. He knows that none of us really want to gamble with 4 left, and it’s likely we’ll only come over the top with a premium hand. There’s the option of a resteal, which I considered, but I think I’d need a couple more chips to make it credible.

Gotta love a walk at this point. Here’s a sign that the table may be a little too tight and leading out should more more often than usual, but I’m in bad position with the stack two to my left.

I didn’t feel like I had a choice here as the blinds went up to 200-400. I hadn’t been moving much and I thought my raise would look credible, even though I’m raising into a 4k stack. If I fold here, I’m in some serious trouble when the blinds get back in two hands.

At this point, even though the blinds have decent chips, I should have enough to make them lay down marginal hands. With an ace and a folder in front of me, I have to think I have the best hand here and also that I have a decent chance of making the blinds lay down an even or slightly better hand like a8 or a small pair. I hate the bb’s call here and was really surprised, even tho a call and a loss would leave him with about 3k, so he can afford it, but I’m not sure why he chose to take a shot here. He was controlling the table on the bubble pretty well and probably would’ve continued to grow as long as we stayed at 4. I fold in a heartbeat if I’m him.

I don’t win a lot of hands with 83o, but this is an auto-call with any two. I’m calling 370 to win about 1200, and unless i’m against a good pair, I should still be drawing live. I make a huge suckout, which is a necessity at some points, and we’re in the money, with me in the chip lead. Let’s see how badly I bungle this [I’m doing this annotation after the fact, obviously, and I don’t remember how the endgame went or where I finished]. While I have a decent lead, it’s just not that secure as the game should open up a bit and the blinds are pretty massive even with my stack.

I decide to be quiet for a few hands and then push with AJ. Why not a smaller raise? Well, I sort of wanted the blinds and I sort of wanted a call at the same time. The other two players had been pretty live for the last few rounds, and I figured one of them might take a shot with a weaker ace. I don’t mind blinding off a bit in this spot if the other two players are active, because there’s a good chance they will beat each other down a little bit and avoid me if I stay quiet. Usually that will get me a walk or two and more respect when I do raise, and I don’t mind just maintaining here for a bit.

This ended up being a pretty important hand that I arguably misplayed. I don’t mind the sb limp at all, and I will obviously get away from the hand if BB raises. When I paired the flop, I don’t mind the check, as my opponent had been pretty live and I thought I might be able to get a checkraise off here. When the turn hit, I probably should’ve bet out, I don’t like my check here at all. It ended up working out, as my opponent bluffed at the river and I had what I thought was an auto-call. First, it doesn’t kill me chip wise as third place is pretty low right now, and second, I was pretty damn sure I was good. No bet on the turn ruled out a jack, and I thought if he had a K, I would’ve seen a raise PF after my limp.

I put these three hands together because they all make the same point about the new bubble happening as the short stack is apparently trying to last out to second, which is a bit insane given his stack. Still, it works for me because the middle stack won’t be taking any chances as long as the short stack remains on the verge of elimination. This gives me a lot more freedom to play small pots against the middle stack and feel relatively confident that he’ll only come at me with a very strong hand, so I can see cheap flops from the sb. It also gets me a walk, which is still a great thing no matter how many chips you have.

I just call and let the sb in because, again, he won’t move without a hand as long as the third player can be eliminated in this hand. There’s also no reason for me to push here, altho now that I look at it, I might’ve pushed in the hopes that I either win and pick up or give the short stack a meaningless double that will keep him in the game and me in control of the game.

Again, just playing the bubble - I would’ve done this with about any two cards, because I now know that the short stack just doesn’t want to call anything without a monster and the SB just can’t call without a monster. I can almost feel how badly the sb does not want to finish 3rd at this point.

Not yet. I have a pretty good lead and I don’t want to double my opponent to an even stack. I’m also folding small pairs, a2-a7, junk broadway cards, etc. This player has been using the allin a ton, and I figure he’ll run into trouble against me at some point. you have to be careful of giving away too many hands in a HU situation, but I feel ok about my HU game in general and I don’t mind playing out. I also don’t mind the limp/fold - I like to set up players by conditioning them to think that when I limp from the sb HU I will fold to an allin. It usually only takes one or two times to get players to auto raise your limp

Hey, one hand later I get what I’m looking for and the tournament ends. I felt like I played fairly mistake-free poker this SNG, with a few exceptions. Largely this came down to me getting some cards when I needed them and picking some good spots. I feel solid about my bubble play especially. I feel like I made the right moves when we got down to 5 and gave myself a good shoot to go deep if I got a hand or two. it’s very rare you’ll pull out a win in one of these without some cards, so my approach is to just try and put myself in a position where I have enough chips and a good image to take advantage of the hands I do hit
