PokerStars has signed soccer star Ronaldo, the online poker site announced.

Ronaldo, a Brazilian who is now retired, is the leading scorer in World Cup history, and a three-time FIFA Player of the Year. He led Brazil to two World Cup titles.

The signing indicates a growing effort by PokerStars both to tap into growing Latin online poker markets and to use the fame of top sports figures. Last year, PokerStars signed Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal. PokerStars has also been growing its live tournament offerings with the Latin American Poker Tour, largely held in South America.

The move also comes with the World Cup about a year away; qualifying is going on now for the 2014 event, which will be held in Brazil.

PokerStars’ blog said Ronaldo will appear online at “SportsStars” tables and will also play upcoming live tournaments in Brazil.
