A report says that U.S. online poker regulation is not included in a Congressional bill on payroll taxes.
In the past week, there have been rumors and reports that language regarding online poker could be included in the payroll tax bill. However, a Politico story that can be viewed here reports that the online poker bill is not in the cards, for now.
From the report by David Saleh Rauf:
A senior Hill staffer confirmed to POLITICO on Wednesday that regulating Internet poker at the federal level will not be part of a tentative deal reached by congressional leaders to extend a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits. … “Airdropping this into the payroll bill wouldn’t sit well with a whole bunch of people from a process standpoint,” a source familiar with the discussions said, pointing to the current brouhaha unfolding in the Senate over an attempt to fast-track cyber security legislation.
The report does substantiate the idea that an online poker bill was at least being discussed by U.S. lawmakers, including Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) which in and of itself is a victory for the online poker community in the U.S. But for now a bill regulating online poker will have to move forward on its own merits, or lawmakers will have to wait for another bill to which they might attach online poker regulation. The high-profile payroll tax issue was already a hot-button issue without adding online poker to the mix.
Online poker has been a contentious issue in the past year in the United States. It began in April when the domains of several online poker sites were seized and indictments made for several people involved with online gaming and poker. More recently, the U.S. Department of Justice released a statement saying that the Wire Act covered only sports betting, leading many to believe that the DOJ does not thing that that law applies to online poker. There have been several Congressional hearings about online poker in recent months, and legislation has already been drafted that would regulate online poker in the U.S.
