A short weekend for most poker players, except those at the WSOPE, those who might be impacted by recent fund seizures or any of the other stories covered in our daily poker news wrap up.
With the WCOOP over, the big story for tournament players is the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. Play is now well under way, and you can catch up-to-the-minute chip counts and the like over at PN’s WSOPE coverage page.
Speaking of the WCOOP, host PokerStars had some self-made news break this weekend, as they set the record for ‘The Most Players at an Internet Poker Room’. Form the press release announcing: “On Sunday September 6, 2009, PokerStars.com recorded 307,016 players at 42,814 tables playing online poker simultaneously – smashing the old record by over 100,000 players.”
Barry Greenstein apparently wouldn’t mind if some of those players weren’t players at all, but poker playing robots, generally referred to as bots. While most in the online poker community oppose them, excerpts from a recent PokerListings interview with Barry suggest he wouldn’t have a problem with bots, as long as they were labeled as such.
Switching from the robotic to the idiotic, US Federal Officials continued their crackdown on payment processors for online poker rooms and casinos with the seizure of funds from six Wachovia accounts, total amount undisclosed. It’s not yet clear what rooms, if any, are impacted by the seizure, but you can get more details over at PND.
While current online operators are facing significant hurdles, others have a far more optimistic outlook on the future of online gaming. Chief among them: Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment, which announced a contract with International Management Group (IMG) to represent the WSOP brand globally until 2013. Look for more WSOPE-esque tournaments under this deal – or at least that’s what one could infer by HIE head Mitch Garber’s comment regarding the contract: “By tapping the global reach and expertise of IMG, we are confident that together we can take the brand to new levels on the international stage through new international bracelet events and other WSOP licensed poker events,” said Garber.
Finally, Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho managed to eek out a ticket to next week on CBS’ Amazing Race. For good coverage written in a more clever manner than we care to attempt, refer to Wicked Chops on this one.
