High stakes news, tournament updates and pessimism on the Barney Frank bill in today’s edition of the PTPN Hit and Run, our daily recap of happenings in the pokerverse.
Two High Stakes Poker-related stories on Friday. If you hadn’t heard, the word is that the show has been picked up for an additional season, so you’ll be able to watch High Stakes Poker Season Six in February or so. The question is, who will be hosting it? Gabe Kaplan has apparently been nabbed to return, but AJ Benza says he’s hearing rumors that he’s to be replaced, possibly by a female co-host.
If we had a vote, we’d keep AJ, as the natural rapport between him and Kaplan and their low-key approach to hosting are both assets for the show.
HSP regular Bob Stupak passed away yesterday. The man that Wicked Chops called “a Vegas and poker legend” died at 67, reportedly of complications from his leukemia.
Switching to WSOPE news, Jani Vilmunen won the 5k PLO event, beating out Howard Lederer for some amount of money that we can’t properly convert to dollars. Other big names at the final table included Robert Williamson III, Ross Boatman and Jeff Kimber.
More at the WSOPE: Paul Zimbler broke a world record for charity by playing heads up for just under 75 hours straight and had to be carried away from his chair after raising 35k pounds or so.
Also looking a little weak at the tables: America, after Europe crushed the US at the inaugural Caesar’s Cup by a margin of 4-1, with Annette Obrestad delivering the final blow in a victory over NBCHUC champ Huck Seed.
In other bad news for Americans: gaming law specialist Tony Cabot told an audience at International Masters of Gaming Law (IMGL) conference in Amsterdam that he was pessimistic about the chances of pro-gaming legislation in the US.
“Nothing is going to happen this year,” Cabot said. “Barney Frank has already pushed his back, and once we get into next year we will be into an election cycle. The Democrats in particular are under a lot of stress at the moment and the last thing the Democrats want to get involved in is an unpopular fight because the Republicans would be all over it.”
