The most expensive .org domain is now poker.org, after a sale of one million dollars was brokered for the rights to the domain.
The sale was brokered on behalf of A-1 National Advertising by SEDO (Search Engine for Domain Offers), an online domain marketplace provider. The buyer? Pokercompany.com, which “is one of the leading groups for online gaming marketing, so called super affiliates, who work with most of the major poker rooms, casinos, skill game and betting companies on the internet to help them acquire customers,” according to its Web site.
Currently, typing poker.org into a Web browser redirects users to the partypoker.com Web site. Pokercompany.com said: “Poker.org is an integral part of our growth strategy, and will provide great dividends now and into the future,” in a press release. The company already owns domains such as blackjack.org and craps.net.
This is the most money ever paid for a .org domain, by a lot. Engineering.org, which used to be the most expensive sale, was sold for just $200,000. A few other .org domains have sold for six figures, as well, but this is the first seven-figure sale. The largest .com sales eclipsed eight figures.
The sale has caused some ripples in the domain industry, with the huge amount of money involved in the sale. And it has even attracted the attention of mainstream publications like The Washington Post.
