Last week was a fairly busy one in the pokerverse, with a wide variety of interesting stories coming out of the tournament, cultural and legal arenas. Below you’ll find a quick summary of the highlights from the last week of March, complete with links to stories with more details (and more links!) regarding the stories mentioned:
Poker saw some steps forward and some steps back on the legal front. The bad news: Washington State rejected an argument by Lee Russo that its law criminalizing online gambling violated the US Constitution. Russo plans to appeal. The EU asserted that the US position on online gambling violates the WTO, but offered no specific steps it plans plans to take in response. Finally, a bill to legalize poker in Texas attempted to climb another rung on the ladder to legislative approval.
The online poker community watched in semi-thrall as Tom Dwan took the lead in the durrrr challenge and as Antonius took it back. Doyle clarified his own version of the durrrr challenge and also made it perfectly clear that his durrrr-esque challenge was, in fact, not in the least bit durrrr-esque. Bugsys Club shut their doors and literally fives of players were impacted.
After analyzing over 100 million hands of online poker, consulting firm Cigital concluded that poker is, in fact, a skill game. Full Tilt Poker released the schedule for FTOPs 12 and Bodog concluded that Scotty Nguyen is a 25-1 dog to make good on his promise to cash for over 4 million in this year’s World Series of Poker.
