What essentially serves as the last week of summer for many doubled as a busy week in the pokerverse, with interesting developments in the worlds of e-gaming legislation (both domestic and international), televised poker and the high stakes online poker community.
The week got started with the premiere of the latest entry in the televised poker parade: G4’s Two Months, Two Million, which follows a group of high stakes online young guns as they attempt to do exactly what the title says while living together in a Vegas mansion. The general verdict of the poker community: a bit light on the poker, but harmless and pretty entertaining.
Tuesday brought with it the debut of a more venerable poker show, as coverage of the 2009 Main Event of The World Series of Poker got underway on ESPN. Hours before the show got underway, the WSOP and ESPN took the opportunity to announce that they had reupped their contract for another seven years.
Finally on the TV front, the folks at PokerStars must have been one of the very few who saw something promising in Face The Ace, because they announced their own heads-up-match-based poker show that will star Daniel Negreanu and debut on Fox Sports at some point in the not-so-distant future…
The week also saw a few headlines featuring a variety of familiar names from the online poker community. Following his deep WSOP ME run, Billy ‘patrolman35′ Kopp joined UltimateBet, the second major signing for UB this month (Liv Boeree came a week or two ago).
Brian Townsend made a lengthy blog post over at Cardrunners announcing that he was walking away from PLO and cashing out the majority of his online roll. As one nosebleed name receded, another emerged, as an unknown player behind the screen name Martonas on Full Tilt Poker got forums buzzing with multi-million dollar swings over marathon sessions against top-flight competition.
As Martonas battled it out for high stakes online, Indian gaming concerns found that their plan for legal intrastate online poker in California would face stiffer opposition than anticipated, as a variety of forces began to marshal resistance to the proposal. Online gambling also took a slight legislative step back in Brazil, as a bill that would make it illegal to process payments for online gambling site went before a key Senate committee, and another Brazilian senator introduced a bill that would force ISPs in Brazil to block access to online gambling sites.
