The data that online poker produces has resulted in a slew of products that help user manipulate that data. The latest set of tools offering a competitive edge to players willing to do the work: PokerHub.
Overview
PokerHub is a site that offers players a suite of specialized tools, including a hand poster, a push-bot chart tool, a tournament info parser and an auto-poster. We’ll discuss each briefly below.
The primary focus of the site is a hand-posting tool. Readers who are familiar with PokerHand.org or similar sites will recognize this tool immediately; it basically allows you to input raw hand history files and get a nicer graphical representation of the hand. PH allows you to upload single hands or multiple hands in a single file; you can also easily control various options regarding how the hands will be displayed.
In addition to storing your own hands, PH offers a growing database of hands submitted by other users that can be searched and browsed, a potentially useful tool if you’re looking to learn more about a specific opponent or just to catch a glimpse into the styles of players other than yourself.
PH also offers a nice tool – the auto-poster – that allows you to bypass the uploading process entirely and post hands with a single keyboard stroke as you play. This is an excellent tool for those who like to pick out key hands for review while playing but are frustrated by the difficulty of a multi-step process – especially annoying when you’re playing a ton of tables.
In addition to that primary tool, PH offers the TournamentParser, which is a fairly specialized program that extracts key data from a tournament history file. Basically, this program takes raw data that Stars sends you about your tournament performance and spits it out in a far more pleasing, readable and customizable format.
The final tool currently offered by the site is called PushPot. Simple enough: the program allows you to set a couple of key variables – players to act, stacks and ranges – and lets you calculate the range of hands you should be shoving with. It’s a useful tool for tournament players who need to polish up their push-fold skills.
Pros
It’s handy to have several tools in one place, and it appears that the site intends to expand. The database of hands is useful, and the auto-post function provides a real advantage over typical hand posting sites.
The tools are all generally simple to download, install and use.
Finally, the tools are all (at this point) free, which is a bonus.
Cons
The biggest drawback of the site at this point is that it feels a bit like a work-in-progress. A lot of features that you’d expect just aren’t there, largely in the user interface department. You don’t have many options for sorting or viewing hands in bulk once you do upload them, and PH only supports FTP / PS / AP.
The site also relies, in part, on a large community for some of the hand posting features to be useful; it’s not really handy to have a searchable database of hands if the database is only populated by a few dozen primary members.
Finally, the extra tools could stand a bit more documentation, especially the PushPot, which would be fairly mystifying to your typical player.
Verdict
It’s free, so there’s no cost in trying it except for your time. The auto-posting function is really handy and if the site continues to expand the tools it offers – specifically tools related to analyzing / reviewing your uploaded hands – it could easily become a popular destination for online poker players.
