UPDATE: Laak broke the record and then some, playing for over 110 straight hours.
How long could you play poker without a break? Ten hours? Twenty? Forty?
If you’re Phil Laak, you’re hoping the answer is 78 hours, as the pro’s attempt to break the world record for poker endurance is now underway.
While the rest of the pokerverse has their attention focused on the WSOP at the Rio, a small slice of those looking for a break from the Series are instead training their eyes on the Bellagio, where Phil Laak is attempting to capture the Guinness World record for Poker Endurance by playing for a staggering 78+ hours straight.
Laak is tweeting regular updates, and so far (a bit under a day in) he doesn’t seem any less lucid than usual. Some samples:
# whomping 199 dollars!!!!!) 24 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®
# 18 down/ 62 to go. (Stuck 35 dollars) about 1 hour ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®
# 17 hrs down / 63 to go. Ustream.com for live feed. (Stuck 430$) hmmm… (Random news, Mitchell keeps crushing souls)
Bit of a yawn-fest so far, but the good stuff should kick in around hour 40 or so.
The attempt is also being broadcast on Ustream, at least for now:

To the delight of online poker meme fans, Phil Laak is attempting to break the poker endurance record by playing … 10/20 at the Bellagio. That’s right, Phil Laak has been spotted playing 10/20 at the Bellagio.
Who currently holds the record Laak covets? Paul Zimbler, who set the current mark of 74 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds at the 2009 WSOPE. Zimbler’s attempt ended in a sad, sad state of affairs that we hope Laak avoids, but that we’re also happy to embed for your viewing pleasure below:
Will Laak succeed? Almost certainly, and while the stunt is basically PR for his online poker room, there’s also the promise of some cash going to charity as well. Keep an eye on the Twitter feed over the next day or so, as Laak will need to play into the weekend to capture the record.
