Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen is having a career year for an online poker player, and there’s still several months to go. If you’re somehow unfamiliar, this is the guy who arguably had the best SCOOP performance in history a few months ago, snagged the top spot in Bluff Power Rankings last week and then added a FTOPS win just for the heck of it.
Mickey is also the newest instructor at our preferred training site CardRunners. His first video should be out right around the time you read this; if you’re interested in watching his and hundreds of other videos, learn how to get free CardRunners here.
Mickey took a little time away from crushing the virtual felts to talk with us about his amazing 2010.
PTP: Congrats on snagging top spot in the Bluff Power Rankings. How much do you pay attention to lists like that – is it something that motivates you in your play?
They do motivate me to a certain extent but my main goal has always just been to make as much money as possible, the rankings are just a byproduct of that. The other thing is that although volume is a major part of the lists at the end of the day they are just showing which reg has been running best lately, right now that guy seems to be me

PTP: Your SCOOP performance was pretty epic. Talk a little bit about it – did you feel a real momentum going into the series, or were you taken by surprise? Was there anything you did uniquely in terms of preparation or strategy, or did you just take your regular game into the series?
It was absolutely insane! Just a week before SCOOP started I had my biggest score in a 5k side-event in Monte Carlo where I got fourth. Two days later I got home and decided to play a session in the evening where I ended up winning my first ftops event. Still I had no idea that I was gonna final table three SCOOP events (and final table bubble another two). Honestly though there isn’t anything specific I can pinpoint as the reason for the success, it was just culmination of a lot of hard work finally paying off.

PTP: For people who aspire to a final table in an online major but haven’t quite gotten there yet, what quick advice would you offer for both getting over the hump and then making something of it once they do get there?
My best advice would be to treat it like any other tournament you play, don’t give any more thought to payjumps than you normally would and don’t start making big folds because you wanna lock up a big cash. If you ever watch the replay of the Sunday Million and there is a professional at the final table notice how they are able to run over the amateurs by constantly opening with marginal hands because they are so afraid to play back at the biggest final table of their life, don’t be that guy!

PTP: More than a few high-profile MTT players have groused that making videos put a serious crimp in their game after the videos were released and opponents adapted – any worries about that on your end?
I suppose a fear that a little too yeah. The thing is thought that it will just force me to readapt my approach to certain situations and make me a better player in the process, I say bring it on!

PTP: What should people expect from your CardRunners videos? How was the process of creating them for you – any challenges or bonuses you didn’t anticipate?
They can expect me to always give all the insight I can into my thought process without me holding back anything, i’m gonna try very hard to provide the best product I possibly can. The main thing that surprised me about the process of making them is how tough find something to talk about all the time ![]()

PTP: What happened between 2008 and 2009? You were obviously putting in some volume during 2008, but your numbers just took off in 2009 – what made it come together for you that year?
Well the two most important things was that I took a year off school to pursue poker so I spent a lot more time playing and put in a lot more volume. I also worked very hard on improving my game by constantly discussing hands with friends, posting on forums etc and then it finally started to pay off.

PTP: If you could wave a wand and implement one rule, feature, etc at PokerStars and Full Tilt, what would it be?
I’d love if both sites had an option for people to show what they fold, if you give people the option of giving you free information a lot of recreational players are gonna do it for some reason. If I couldn’t pick that id say auto-addon for Full Tilt and a visible timebank for Pokerstars.
