With the WSOPE come and gone, many observers were wondering what became of the Tom “durrrr” Dwan Million Dollar Challenge which was scheduled to take place alongside the European tournament series. Event organizers apparently had difficulty securing enough people willing to play Dwan, as only one opponent – Sammy “Any Two” George – signed on for the match.
Now it appears the event isn’t dead, but just headed for Vegas.
While offering no official explanation for the delay, event promoter Eddie Hearn told DurrrrChallenge.com that the MDC is alive and well: “It’s still very much on, but things have been crazy in London and now Tom has made through to the semi-finals of Poker Million, [so] it now looks like it will be held in Vegas in early December.”
As planned, the MDC is a much different animal than its online counterpart. While the online durrrr challenge saw Dwan laying his opponents pretty sick odds that they wouldn’t show a profit over 50,000 hands, the live version has no such component. Instead, it’s a four-part match, 500 hands a part, where players can choose PLO or NL. Players can’t exit the match until they bust or until 500 hands have been played. The buy in: 500k. The blinds: 500/1000.
It’s unclear whether or not George is still on board for the rescheduled match. There’s also no word on who might round out the line up challenging Dwan. While Luke ‘Full Flush1′ Schwartz seems like a natural choice given his public and pronounced antipathy toward Dwan, Schwartz made it clear in a recent interview with PokerListings that the 500k required to sit at the table would tax his current bankroll unacceptably.
“I’m not much of a live player and sitting down with $500,000 is obviously quite deep, so it’s not the first thing that comes to my mind,” he said. “But I would like to do a challenge with him of some sort at some stage quite soon.”
Matchroom Sport, the event’s sponsor, has yet to post an official update regarding the event on their website.
While the live poker challenge will play out in a casino, you can catch the online durrrr challenge at Full Tilt Poker. If you don’t have an account at FTP, read this before you sign up.
