Televised poker doesn’t show any signs of slowing down despite the current glut of programming. Increasingly popular in the latest wave of shows are programs that focus more on a reality-show driven narrative, a trend that will continue this week with the launch of WSOP champ Joe Hachem’s show ‘The Poker Star.’
TPS, a show that will air in Australia, kicks off this coming Saturday, September 26th on ONE following the AFL grand final.
The premise of the show is that a group of people interested in becoming Australia’s next ‘poker star’ will all live in a house together and presumably compete in a series of challenges that will eventually whittle the group down to one remaining contestant, yada yada yada.
The winner gets to travel with Team PokerStars PRO Australia for a year and a prize of $100,000 (Australian, we assume).
Hachem says that research conducted by PokerStars, his sponsoring room, convinced him to craft a field of contestants that is more diverse than the typical picture of a poker pro: “The older generation is really starting to embrace poker, turning to it as a mental exercise to keep their minds active post retirement. Women are coming to the game in hordes, almost matching their male counterparts for participation, particularly in online spaces. It’s encouraging to see the sport’s ranks opening up, and the field of competitors becoming increasingly diverse.”
The majority of the field was hand-selected by Hachem.
Hachem continued: “The contenders reflect the new face of the scene – from Ron, a 60-year-old war veteran who took up poker in his retirement, to Sally, a 24-year-old former ballerina. The one thing they all share is a passion for the sport and a hunger to succeed.”
Non-Australian viewers will probably be able to check the show out on Pokertube.
Given the recent tit-for-tat between PokerStars and Full Tilt, we’d be shocked if you don’t hear plans for a similar show sponsored by FTP in the next few weeks or months.
Thinking about opening an online poker account? We suggest Full Tilt Poker, but before you open an account anywhere, you should read this first.
