After earning one of the largest scores in the history of parttimepoker.com for his investors, Jonas Karlsson, better known by his screenname “Dihxm,” had some time to reflect on his victory in an interview with PTP.
Earlier this week Karlsson, a 29-year-old from Lund, Sweden, won a tournament in the latest FTOPS touranment series at Full Tilt Poker: Event No. 28, a $256 no-limit hold’em 6-max knockout event. Dihxm took the top prize of $165,520 and won his first FTOPS gold jersey.
Before the tournament, Dihxm put up a “Buy a Piece” ad for the FTOPS event that he won and the $640 main event. In BAPs at parttimepoker.com, members invest money in players for a share of any winnings they earn. In this BAP, Dihxm and his investors split the six figures in prize money. One member turned his $150 investment in Dihxm into more than $21,000 dollars. It was easily the biggest cash in his five-year
Dihxm took some time to chat with PTP after the win:
PTP: What was your reaction when you won?
Dihxm: I couldn’t scream because my roommates were sleeping. I think I did a weird little dance though. It was like the exact opposite of suffering a horrible beat but with the same kind of disbelief. Just unreal. I remember thinking to myself, “Man, if I wake up now and this was all just a dream I’m gonna be so pissed.
PTP: Can you tell me a little about how the final table went for you?
Dihxm: It just went my way. As soon as I got the chip lead it got a lot easier. Nobody wants to go out when the next pay jump is $20k. Even though number1pen was to my immediate left I still felt I had very good position at the table. I was very aware of the play of the two guys to my right since they were at my table before the final table, so I could comfortably play back at them lighter when that seemed profitable. When it got 4- and 3-handed it got even easier as the payjumps were bigger. Then the guy two to my left shoved into my aces, and you know, that helps. Three-handed I believe that jesse guy got a bit coolered with AQ against my QQ and I held. So nothing spectacular, my hands were just holding. HU with number1pen I had the chiplead and he was willing to discuss a deal where I got $155,500, he got $142,500 and we left $10,020 to play for. A little less than a chip chop but I know hes a beast so I don’t mind giving up a few k to avoid playing HU and possibly just win 117k when I can secure 155k and be a favorite to win the extra 10k. So I was happy.
PTP: How is the FTOPS win going to change things for you, personally and poker-wise?
Dihxm: I’m really happy it took me this long to bink the big score. Had it happened like two years ago chances are I would have been irresponsible with the money, playing higher stakes out of my comfort zone. I’ve been playing long enough to know at what stakes I’m comfortable and where I make the most profit. I’m gonna do a lot more staking but I’m still gonna grind $163s and put up weekend BAPs. You wont see me playing the $1k Tuesday anytime soon. In my personal life, not much will change. I have a few people close to me who I will spoil a bit, but I’m not gonna spend too much money. I will probably do a bit of traveling as well, but that’s it.
PTP: What was the key for you to getting through the huge field in an FTOPS event? Any tips you have for multi-table grinders?
Dihxm: Don’t be a robot. Play more hands vs. bad players. So many of your opponents pretty much play their hands face up. Take advantage of them. Also, never forget the variance in MTTs is huge. Even a grinder who plays 30-plus tourneys a day only has a few key pots on any given day and him doing good or bad is determined by the outcome of these very few huge hands. That makes for insane variance, even in the long run. MTT variance can have a great player losing for a long time. Another important thing is to never stop learning. Don’t disregard your own ideas about the game. Use them, and discuss them with other players.
PTP: How did you find out about PTP?
Dihxm: I Googled “online poker staking”, thinking I would probably never get staked because I thought only the super beastly players had that opportunity. I already had good stats, but I never thought anyone would stake me. I looked at a few sites and liked PTP best! Within a few hours I had my first stake going with [PTP member] Dweeeb.
PTP: How important has PTP been for your poker career?
Dihxm: Huge. Probably wouldn’t be playing still if it weren’t for PTP and the awesome people I’ve gotten to know there.
PTP: What was your biggest score before winning the FTOPS event?
Dihxm: Relatively small. I think somewhere around $10 or $11k.
PTP: Do you play much live poker?
Dihxm: I don’t. The only big live tourney I’ve ever played was the LAPT-Rio in 2008 ($2,500 buy-in). I got knocked out after two hours after some dude called me down to the river with a 10 high flush draw on a paired board for half his stack and hit. I went up to my room, ordered room service and got second in the ongame 30r for $7k, while getting disconnected like every 3rd hand or so. I remember thinking about how much I prefer online play to live play.
