Details of ‘Global Poker League’ Released to

Dustin Gouker : April 7th, 2015

Global Poker Index CEO Alex Dreyfus is continuing his efforts to “sportify” poker with the Global Poker League, according to an exclusive interview given to

Dreyfus released some of the details of the new team-based poker league. Dreyfus is coming off successful ventures with the American Poker Awards, the American Poker Conference, the European Poker Awards and the Global Poker Masters — an event trying to market itself as the “World Cup” of poker.

The GPL, according to Dreyfus, will take place over 10 weeks, starting in August or September. Eight teams consisting of seven players each will be selected in a draft. Players in the draft pool will likely come from the top players in the Global Poker Index’s ranking system.

The goal of the GPL is to attempt to market poker more as a sport, to give it more mass appeal. Few details about how the league would actually work were given out by Dreyfus. Events will be streamed live on Twitch.

More from the Dreyfus interview:

All in all, the GPI is going to invest between $3-$5 million in the project, and this shows you that we are taking a big risk. We know that the GPL could fail, and we know that if we were to fail, we would also damage everything we have done so far. However, I believe that the GPL is the most valuable asset and project we can develop. It connects online poker to live poker and, at the same time, it doesn’t compete at all with the existing circuits.

Dreyfus also said the GPL will not conflict with major poker tournaments, so that the best players in the world could play, if they wanted to. Also, he said all participants’ expenses would be covered by the GPL.

The website for the Global Poker League is up, but there is no content, as of yet.
