In our monthly overlay report, we provide a summary of the online poker tournaments that are likely to have overlays – basically, money added to the tournament prize pool. We break down the best overlays, by room, below.

What are overlays?

Online poker rooms often run tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. When not enough players enter to make the guarantee, the room has to make up the difference. That difference is called an overlay, and it basically amounts to money added to the prize pool of a tournament – a great value for online poker players.

What tournaments are likely to have overlays this month?

We reviewed the regular tournaments that offered overlays in April. Based on an analysis of those tournaments, here are the rooms and tournaments likely to offer the best value to tournament players in May….

Bodog: While traffic to the room is increasing, resulting in a slight overlay dent, Bodog is still offering great values for tournament players across a wide spectrum of buy ins. Example: The 15k guaranteed that runs on weekday evenings at 7:30EST with a buy in of $55 missed by as much as $3500 last month. The $4k guaranteed, an early afternoon tournament (2:30 EST) with a $40 buy in came up over $1000 short several times last month. Carbon Poker: Overlays are back for smaller buy in players on Carbon, but there’s one overlay for bigger buy in players that can’t be missed – the Carbon Sunday 50k guaranteed, a $109 buy in that overlaid between 20-25k in April. Cake Poker: Cake has a lot of solid overlay values for players, especially in the early morning to late afternoon part of their tournament schedule. Look for small buy in tournaments on weekday mornings to offer solid overlays, and then stick around for the best daily value on cake – a $50 buy in tournament with a 10k guarantee that regularly misses by several hundred dollars. Ultimate Bet / Absolute Poker (CEREUS): A traffic drop off at the network seems to have brought decent overlay values back to UB / AP, especially in the higher buy in tournaments. Keep an eye on their Sunday major, which added as much as 18k last month. Also, watch the lobby in the late evening for smaller buy in tournaments that can offer decent overlays, such as the $30 and $40 buy in tournaments that generally add a few hundred to the prize pool. Stars and Full Tilt continue to by and large make their guarantees, although Stars had to add a ton of money to some SCOOP prize pools.
