“Bankroll Builder” is an article series where we highlight solid values for online poker players – covering bonuses, soft games, special tournaments, and so on. This installment focuses on tournaments likely to have overlays in the upcoming weeks.

What are overlays?
Online poker rooms often run tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. When not enough players enter to make the guarantee, the room has to make up the difference. That difference is called an overlay, and it basically amounts to money added to the prize pool of a tournament – a great value for online poker players

What tournaments are likely to have overlays this month?
Based on what scheduled tournaments failed to make their guarantees over the last few weeks, here’s what the upcoming weeks are likely to offer….

Bodog: While the guarantees aren’t as large as they used to be, there is still a massive amount of money added to tournaments every day at Bodog. You’ll find the best values at the lowest and highest end – their Sunday tournament almost always overlays significantly, and the Bodog 4k gtd, a $40+4 buyin that runs at 2:30pm est overlayed by $760 last time we checked.

Carbon Poker: You’ll see decent overlays in their lower buyin tournaments, especially in the early afternoon. Their overlays tend to be highest in tournaments without rebuys or add ons. One great example: The Carbon Poker 2.5k gtd, a $25+2.25 buyin that runs at 4:30pm est weekdays and overlayed at $600 on last check.

Cake Poker: Midstakes at off-peak hours are the best times to find an overlay at Cake Poker, like their 12:30pm EST $50 buyin that overlayed by $700 on last check.

Ultimate Bet: The merger of the lobby with Absolute has trimmed down some of UBs overlay costs, but their sunday major tournament is like to continue to fall short of its $200k guarantee by a significant amount. Last time we checked, UB had to add nearly 15k to make up the difference.

The holidays brought some temporary overlays to FTP and Stars tournaments, but that’s unlikely to continue in the weeks ahead.
