What are overlays?
Online poker rooms often run tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. When not enough players enter to make the guarantee, the room has to make up the difference. That difference is called an overlay, and it basically amounts to money added to the prize pool of a tournament – a great value for online poker players

What tournaments are likely to have overlays this month?
Based on what scheduled tournaments failed to make their guarantees over the last few weeks, here’s what the upcoming weeks are likely to offer….

Bodog: Bodog continues to add tens of thousands of dollars a month to their tournament prize pools. You’ll find overlays at a wide variety of buyin levels and times – basically, if there’s a guaranteed tournament, there’s probably an overlay. Highlights: The sunday 100k guaranteed, which had an overlay exceeding 30k – a full third of the prize pool – several times in January. For smaller bankrolls, check out the $40 and $30 freezeouts during the afternoon on weekdays.

Carbon Poker: Great values for lower buyin players and afternoon players. The larger overlays have been removed, but you can still find overlays up to 20% in the early parts of the schedule. Our pick: the weekday 4:30 EST tournament with a $25 buyin and a 2.5k guarantee that overlaid by as much as $500 last month. Get 30% rakeback at Carbon Poker.

Cake Poker: Cake is making their larger guarantees during prime time, but is still missing them during the afternoon. Look for the rebuy tournaments in the afternoon and the mid buyin freezeouts, also in the afternoon, for the best values. Example: the 10k guarantee with a $50 buyin that runs at 12:30PM often overlays by 1k or more. Get 33% rakeback at Cake here.

Ultimate Bet: UB seems to be covering the majority of their guarantees, but that may fade in the coming months as the novelty of the UB / AP merger wears off. Keep an eye on the Sunday major at UB – while it’s been making the guarantee recently, it’s an erratic field that can often miss the 200k mark by several thousand dollars.

Stars and Full Tilt continue to by and large make their guarantees.
