In this installment of the series, we provide our monthly summary of the online poker tournaments that are likely to have overlays – basically, money added to the tournament prize pool. We break down the best overlays, by room, below.

What are overlays?

Online poker rooms often run tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. When not enough players enter to make the guarantee, the room has to make up the difference. That difference is called an overlay, and it basically amounts to money added to the prize pool of a tournament – a great value for online poker players.

What tournaments are likely to have overlays this month?

Based on what scheduled tournaments failed to make their guarantees over the last few weeks, here’s what the upcoming weeks are likely to offer….

Bodog: With cashout problems apparently cleared up, Bodog may be one of the best bets for tournament players looking for value. There’s rarely a guaranteed tournament on their schedule that actually makes the guarantee, and unlike some other rooms where you’ll only find overlays in tournaments with massive fields, Bodog has overlays across a wide spectrum of field sizes and buy ins. Example: The 15k guaranteed that runs on weekday evenings at 7:30EST with a buy in of $55 missed by as much as $4100 last month. The $2k guaranteed, an early tournament (10am EST) with a $12 buy in came up over $700 short several times last month – that’s nearly half the prize pool added. These are values that grinding players cannot afford to ignore.

Carbon Poker: Carbon has been cutting back on the guarantees the last couple of months, but there are still some values for those willing to cherrypick the schedule. Our favorite remains the 2.5k guarantee, a $25 buy in tournament at 4:30pm est that usually misses by $300-$500 dollars – again, a nice chunk of the prize pool. Keep an eye on the tournament lobby in the early morning to afternoon hours and you’ll find a steady stream of lower buy in tournaments with nice overlays. Cake Poker: Cake is getting bigger, which is resulting in softer tournament fields, but also in decreased overlays. That doesn’t mean there aren’t still sweet spots on the schedule, just that they’re not as common as they once were. The morning tournaments that were missing last month are now making, but there’s still at least one awesome value on the schedule: a weekday 12:30pm EST tournament with a $55 buyin and a 10k guarantee that regularly misses by anywhere from $500-$1000. Ultimate Bet / Absolute Poker (CEREUS): Overlays are spotty on this network as of late for mid to large buy in tournaments, but small buy in tournaments are still providing great values. In the afternoon you’ll find a lot of $2-$15 buy in tournaments with guarantees that are missing by anywhere from 10-20%. Example: the 1pm EST tournament with a $5 buy in and a 2k guarantee missed by anywhere from $150-$300 several times last month. Get rakeback at Absolute poker here.
