Remember the days when ESPNs WSOP coverage got underway months after the WSOP concluded? No longer. The final table has only been set for a week or two now, and ESPN is already scheduled to get kick off their 30+ episode series covering the 2009 World Series of Poker.
This year’s schedule marks a dramatic change from years past. If you flipped to ESPN in the early weeks of their 2008 WSOP coverage, you’d be likely to see the final table of some event in the mid-teens or so, including some of the more esoteric games. Not every event got coverage, but a good deal got at least a nod and a few words from Norman Chad.
This year you won’t need a scorecard to track the tournaments – only four will be shown. There’s the 40k anniversary tournament, the WSOP Champions Cup Invitational (the small freeroll populated by former Main Event winners), the Ante up For Africa Charity Event and, getting the lion’s share of the episodes, the Main Event of the 2009 WSOP.
The schedule (all times EST):
July 28 — 8-10 p.m., ESPN
WSOP $40,000 Special Anniversary Tournament
August 4 — 8-10 p.m., ESPN
WSOP Champions Cup Invitational
August 11 — 8-10 p.m., ESPN
Ante Up For Africa Charity
August 18 to Sept. 22 8-10 p.m., ESPN
WSOP main event episodes 7-18
September 29 8-11 p.m., ESPN
WSOP main event episodes 19-21
October 6 10-11 p.m., ESPN
WSOP main event episode 22
October 13 to Nov. 3 — 9-11 p.m., ESPN
WSOP main event shows 23-30
November 10 — 9-11:30 p.m., ESPN
WSOP main event final table
So if you’re looking for tournament PLO8 on TV, I guess you’ll have to turn to … well, reruns of past WSOPs. Or make your own.
